Alexander

Considering the total story in short, on his father’s demise, Manu Verma (Bala) arrives at Mumbai and spends the first half of the film in finding his half brother Alexander (Mohanlal) whom he has never seen in his life, but who has been entrusted with the entirety of his father’s wealth. He finds Alex and gets surprise with discovering of that he is not normal. The second half has Alexander arriving in Dubai with Manu and finally coming back to Mumbai. If you think that this is not enough then go-on reading..

The real ordeal starts with Manu dragging Alexander out of the clinic. The magic you see in this film is that Alexander keeps asking for specific colored shirts as the clock keeps ticking away. So we need to hang on till the shirt change is over. And once that’s done, he insists on a number at the dinner table. Four is the magic number, whether it is idlis or chapathees.

The man Alexander is a real genius. For starters, he was about to graduate from a medical school. He learns telephone directories by heart. He could tell which continent Egypt is in. And the top in all is, he takes part in Maths Wizard competitions and wins a cash prize of one lakh rupees.

Mohanlal is the true savior in this film, as much as it remains that the film itself could never be saved.
Alexander the Great is as incomprehensible as the mutterings of its chief character. It’s confused, and utterly unfathomable. The film has nothing going for it except its leading star.

Janakan

Posted by surfingall on May 4, 2010

There have been films, even recent ones, that have dealt with this much discussed theme of sexual abuse. Of these films, Janakan has quite a strong resemblance to Vairam, which is very surprising, since both the films have common actors, and it’s amazing that these similarities were never pointed out.Viswanathan (Suresh Gopi) and his wife Nirmala (Kaveri) adore their only daughter who gets brutally raped and later murdered. Advocate Surya Narayanan (Mohanlal) is the only lawyer who could save Viswanathan and his friends (Biju Menon and Harisree Ashokan) who emerge on a revenge spree and are now wanted by the police.

Janakan falters mostly because it’s never able to dwell on the crime itself. This is what makes it dissimilar to a film like Achanurangatha Veedu, where there is no escape from the crime and its manifestations. In Janakan, the focus is on the thrills, while the crime remains on the border lines.
